Scaling and root Planing
Scaling and root planing otherwise known as a deep cleaning is preformed when a patient has periodontal disease, also known as gum disease. This type of cleaning removes the calculus or tartar from above and below your gums. The calculus that sits below your gumline is full of bacteria that can cause gingival inflammation, bone loss and deep pockets around your teeth which happens over a period of time. Only a dental professional is able to clean this build up off of your teeth properly. It usually takes more than one appointment to accuratly deep clean your teeth.
Periodontal Maintenance
After your scaling and root planing appointment, you will be asked to come back every 3-4 months for periodontal maintenence. These appointments are more frequent but are treated like regular cleanings. Your hygienist will examine your gums tissues and pocket depths to make sure your periodontal disease is not progressing. You may be able to go back to a normal 6 month recall schedule if your hygienist and doctor think your mouth is in a stable condition.
